Learn the fundamentals of concept design for film, games, and other media.
Understand the principles of story telling through characters, environments,
and props. Learn the benefits of storyboards and color scripts. Students will
explore their unique personal vision. For serious artists who want to learn
why visual intelligence is a powerful tool when telling stories in any media.
Through lectures, reviewing film snippets and other concept designers, sketching, brainstorming, the student will learn visual development techniques. Understanding the timeless principles of communicating a storyline is crucial for employment in the entertainment industries as well as the industry they may create around themselves.
LEARNING OUTCOME
A. Understand principles of storytelling. Understand the benefits of storyboards.
B. Understand personality of a character through design, fashion and movement.
Learn how environments compliment the story and can become their own characters.
C. Create props to compliment the character and storyline.
D. Tap into the unique vision of your imagination.
DAY ONE- Lecture on the Art of Visual Story. We will review how story principles affect the entire design of a project. What is a Style Guide? The art of the Story Board. We will break down a simple scene with story boards.
DAY TWO- The art of character design. What makes an interesting character and
how do they serve the story? Starting with simple shapes the characters whether
human, alien, animal, or monster must have a sold visual intelligence designed into it.
DAY THREE- The Art of Environmental Design. The world which the story lives in can be simple, complex or vast but it must always serve the story point. We review the principles of solid environment design and how it is used to set the stage, by sketching out various scenes.
DAY FOUR- Today we focus on the art of props and vehicles. How do these things serve the story? Form follows function is the mantra for good product design, however this depends on the genre of the story. Starting with simple shapes we will sketch out concepts. Review.
MATERIALS
Graphite sticks, pencils, kneaded eraser, stick/barrel eraser, sketchbook, or iPad with Procreate or laptop computer with Photoshop.
